Su Story

I was about 45, married, and out for a quiet drink at a local in Westville with a girlfriend. It was just the two of us – it didn’t occur to us that anything could happen in a small local so close to home in the early evening – I mean spiking only happens to teenagers in clubs late at night right?

NOT! We were onto our second drink when I needed to go to the bathroom. I left my drink on the table with my friend. She turned her back on the table for less than a minute to chat to someone while I wasn’t there. When I returned, we carried on chatting and finished our drinks.

It happened quickly. I started feeling strange, like I’d had FAR to much to drink. I was slurring and lethargic. We decided to call it a night and head home. How on earth I managed to drive we still wonder about. I remember my friend sitting beside me telling me I’d better pull over and let her drive – apparently I was all over the road.

Luckily by then we were less than 500m from home. Within minutes we were inside and I collapsed on a kitchen stool and sprawled out over the kitchen counter. My husband was convinced I was plastered! My friend showed him the slip from the local – we had only had two drinks each.

And that’s when we realised what must have happened. My husband and friend got me into bed and I slept like the dead. When I woke up in the morning I had absolutely no recollection of the evening from the time I got into my car to drive home. I also had no hangover, but I felt exhausted – like I’d been hit by a bus!
